Healthier Living starts with a Ring Doorbell...Really?

Continuing our series on better living in retirement, one of the most interesting findings recently published is that home security systems reduce stress (which we all knew) but that chronic stress actually causes more illness! As might be expected, scientists can't agree on how to measure stress precisely, but like many things, we know it when we see it.

Like when you know you'll be coming home to an empty house after dark, and turn on all the lights before you leave.

Or when there's an unexpected noise or visitor, that little surge of adrenalin.

Over time, given months or years, the cumulative effect has been described as a "loss of resiliency" and is a "wear and tear" effect on the body.

And a prime example of this stress building up is the studies of women over 65, living alone have elevated cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland that plays a vital role in the body's response to stress, anxiety, and pressure. These same women have 2-4 times the rates of depression, 30% more illness, and 20% more hospital admissions than those not living alone. A Google search gives this: "

Elevated cortisol levels...can have negative effects on overall health, including weight gain, sleep disturbances, and mood changes."

So do youhave to have a $2000 whole house security alarm system to feel much more secure?

Of course not.

We think (can't prove it) even just the lowly video doorbell can go a long way toward being in control of your home and it's entries. Ring's immediate video display when motion is detected gives you choices. Answer it, ignore it, call the police. All without opening your door.

Want to read about this yourself before believing it? Here's independent studies on the topic.
